Selling your hair
Long, untreated hair has a genuine buyer market for wigs and extensions. It is a one-off sale on a classifieds model, which means you handle the transaction and carry the risk yourself.
How the money works
You list your hair on a classifieds-style marketplace. Buyers contact you directly, you negotiate, agree payment, cut and ship. Most sites charge an up-front listing fee and take no commission, which means they also provide no escrow.
Time to first payment
Weeks to months, and frequently never. Listings commonly expire without a sale.
Understand the model before you list
Hair marketplaces are classifieds, not marketplaces in the sense you are used to. They take an up-front listing fee, take no commission, and — critically — do not hold funds, verify buyers, or provide escrow.
That structure has one important consequence: every bit of transaction risk sits with you. There is no platform to appeal to if a buyer disappears after you have cut and shipped.
This is the opposite of how Etsy, FeetFinder or Sniffspot work, and confusing the two is the most expensive mistake in this category.
The one rule that matters
Never cut before payment has cleared.
Cut hair has no alternative buyer and no return path. A ponytail cut for a buyer who vanishes is worth nothing, and you cannot undo it. Every other piece of advice here is secondary to that.
What buyers actually pay for
Four things, in rough order of importance:
- Virgin status — never dyed, bleached or chemically treated. This is the biggest single price determinant, and it is why hair that looks beautiful can still be worth little.
- Length — measured from the intended cut point. Value rises steeply rather than linearly with length.
- Thickness — the circumference of the ponytail, which is what determines how much usable material there is.
- Colour — uncommon natural shades attract more interest.
Misrepresenting any of these ends the sale at inspection and wastes the listing fee.
Why we do not quote prices
You will see confident average figures quoted widely. They trace to affiliate-funded articles with no stated methodology, and real prices vary enormously across the four factors above.
The useful move is to look at currently active listings with specifications similar to yours, and note that a listed price is an asking price rather than a sale price.
The listing fee is a real, non-refundable cost
You pay it whether or not you sell, and many listings expire unsold. Before paying any fee, check that the site has recent active listings — a dead marketplace still happily takes a listing fee.
Be certain about the cut
Regrowth to sellable length takes years. This is a one-off sale, and it should be a decision you would be comfortable with even if the hair did not sell.
Where to sell it
Listed alphabetically. Ordering is never influenced by whether a platform pays us — see methodology.

How to start
- Assess honestly against what buyers pay for. Length, virgin status, thickness of the ponytail, and colour. Chemically treated hair is worth dramatically less, and misrepresenting it ends sales at inspection.
- Measure and weigh before listing. Buyers purchase by length and weight. Measure from where the cut will be made, not from the scalp.
- Photograph in natural light from several angles. Include the full length against a measuring tape. Colour accuracy matters more than styling.
- Never cut before payment clears. The single most important rule in this category. Cut hair has no fallback buyer and no return path.
- Agree payment method and shipping in writing. There is no platform escrow on a classifieds model. Your payment method is your only protection.
Scams and risks to know
Cut-first fraud
How it works: A 'buyer' asks you to cut and ship before paying, then disappears.
How to avoid it: Never cut or ship before payment has cleared. Hair cannot be un-cut, and this is the defining risk of the category.
Overpayment cheque scam
How it works: A buyer overpays by cheque and asks for a refund of the difference. The cheque bounces later.
How to avoid it: Use a payment method with buyer and seller protection. Never refund an overpayment.
Payment reversal after delivery
How it works: A buyer pays by a reversible method and files a chargeback after receiving the hair.
How to avoid it: Understand the protections of your payment method. Friends-and-family transfers have no recourse whatsoever.
Listing-fee sites with no traffic
How it works: A site charges to list but has essentially no buyers.
How to avoid it: Check whether the site has recent, active listings before paying any fee.
Good fit if
- People already planning a significant cut
- Anyone with long, untreated, healthy hair
- Those comfortable managing a direct transaction with a stranger
Not for you if
- Anyone with chemically treated or heavily damaged hair
- People wanting recurring income — this is a one-off sale with years of regrowth
- Anyone uncomfortable handling payment risk without platform protection
Eligibility
- Generally at least 10-12 inches of hair, with longer lengths worth substantially more
- Virgin (never chemically treated or dyed) hair commands the most
- Healthy hair without significant split ends or heat damage
- Willing to cut it — this is irreversible
