Why this is the honest starting point
Nothing else in this guide combines a zero startup cost, a same-week first payment, no identity exposure, and a platform-enforced pay floor. If you are unsure whether any of this is for you, start here — you can find out within a week for nothing.
The one number that is actually verifiable
Prolific requires researchers to pay at least £6/$8 per hour and recommends £9/$12 per hour or more. That floor is enforced: Prolific calculates the effective hourly rate from the median completion time, not the researcher’s optimistic estimate, and polices underpaying studies.
This matters because it makes Prolific one of the few platforms where the advertised rate resembles the real one.
What we will not tell you
We will not tell you what you can earn per month. Study allocation is demographic matching — if researchers frequently want your age, country and occupation profile, you will see steady work; if they rarely do, you will see very little. Two people joining the same day can have completely different experiences, and neither is doing anything wrong.
Anyone quoting you a confident monthly figure is guessing, usually to sell you something.
Protecting your approval rate
Your approval rate is the real asset. It gates access to better-paid studies, and it is easy to damage: rushing an attention check, abandoning a study midway, or submitting without the completion code. Treat the first ten studies as reputation-building rather than income.
The scam pattern to know
Legitimate panels never charge participants. Any site charging for access to studies, or requiring a fee to release your earnings, is not a research panel. This is the most common fraud in this category precisely because the real thing is free.

How to start
- Complete every demographic question. Study allocation is entirely demographic matching. An incomplete profile is the single biggest cause of 'there are never any studies'.
- Answer honestly. Misrepresenting demographics to qualify for more studies gets accounts terminated and earnings withheld. Screener answers are cross-checked over time.
- Enable notifications. Well-paid studies fill within minutes. Speed of response matters more than anything else you control.
- Read the reward and estimated time before starting. Prolific displays the reward per study. Work out the hourly rate yourself before committing.
- Do not rush the actual task. Rejected submissions are unpaid and damage your approval rate, which gates access to better studies.

Paid-access 'panels'
How it works: A site charges a fee for a list of studies or 'priority access'.

Fake screener phishing
How it works: A 'screening survey' asks for bank details, a scan of your ID, or payment to release earnings.
How to avoid it: Screeners ask demographic questions. None require banking credentials up front or a fee to withdraw.
Overpayment via cheque
How it works: A 'research company' sends a cheque for equipment and asks you to forward part of it.
How to avoid it: This is a classic cheque-fraud pattern. Real panels pay after the work, never before.
